Game of Thrones: War for Westeros Is the Franchise's Most Faithful Strategy Game Yet
Preview: Game of Thrones: War for Westeros impresses with lore-accurate strategy gameplay, coming to Steam in early 2027.
According to the hands-on report, the demo version only offered 1-v-1 skirmishes between House Stark and House Lannister, while the White Walkers and the Targaryens will be available in the full game. The reviewer said the game stays lore-accurate: Starks can deploy direwolves in battle, and Lannisters can generate resources through gold mines. It feels like you're immersed in the world, rather than having banners slapped on random armies.
Players will be able to control known characters such as Robb Stark, Jon Snow, Tywin Lannister and Jaime Lannister, letting them rewrite the story. The author noted that killing Tywin Lannister was deeply satisfying, a sign that Charles Dance's portrayal left a strong impression.
The full game will support up to four players, either with other players or against AI. Units are split into four types: melee infantry, ranged, mounted and siege. Each player starts in their own zone, capturing strongholds, gathering resources and constructing buildings. The reviewer described the mechanics as standard for the genre but still challenging and fast-paced, requiring quick decisions. They also praised the game's polish and visuals, though they encountered a few AI opponent bugs that seemed easy to fix.
Previous Game of Thrones game adaptations were often disappointing, the report said, but this one places players in the heart of the Seven Kingdoms. The game does not have a confirmed retail price yet.
