Garmin launches six-model Marq 3rd-Gen luxury smartwatch range from $2,500

Garmin has launched the third-generation Marq series, a six-model luxury smartwatch line starting at $2,500, £2,199 or around AU$3,500. The range uses grade-5 titanium, ceramic bezels, nano-moulded polymer antenna strips and inductive buttons, and doubles storage to 128GB.

The six models are the Aviator, Adventurer, Commander, Athlete, Diver and Golfer. The Diver replaces the previous generation’s Captain model. Garmin positions Marq as an ultra-premium, style-forward line alongside its more practical Fenix, Instinct and Forerunner watches, according to TechRadar.

The higher price pays for polished ceramic bezel inlays, micro-knurled buttons and a full grade-5 titanium casing, with no significant plastic elements on show. That creates an engineering challenge because metal blocks wireless signals, and a fitness watch needs reliable GPS and Bluetooth. Garmin’s solution is to use slim strips of plastic polymer in the frame, fused to the titanium “at nano scale” with a process called nano-moulding technology. TechRadar compared the approach to the non-metal strips in an iPhone’s casing.

Garmin COO Brad Trenkle told TechRadar that the company is not pretending Marq is a direct alternative to a Patek Philippe, Rolex or Audemars Piguet. “We didn’t set out to build a mechanical watch that was designed to be passed down from generation to generation,” Trenkle said. Smartwatches are sealed units with lithium batteries and therefore have a shelf life, but Trenkle said Garmin’s own user data shows most users tend to use their Garmin watches longer than they use their smartphones.

The new Marq also adopts button and sealing technology developed for dive-ready Garmin watches. When the Garmin Fenix 8 arrived in 2024, inductive buttons helped make 40-meter dive-ready water resistance possible because no hole is made in the casing to house the buttons. Trenkle described the Marq as having a wall of polymer that makes a complete seal between the watch case, with no gasket and just one piece. To improve feel, Marq watches pair an inductive button for function with a mechanical clicker. TechRadar said the Adventurer’s button feedback was exceptionally bright but substantive.

All six watches share upgrades. The Marq Generation 3 has 128GB of storage, compared with the 64GB that TechRadar said has become standard for higher-end Garmin models such as the Fenix 9 and Enduro 4. The extra space can be used for more maps, music, podcasts and audiobooks. The watches also use a tweaked four-pin magnetic charging interface rather than the classic Garmin charger. TechRadar noted that the second-generation Marq introduced a unique magnetic charge interface in 2022, but it has not yet moved down to the Fenix line.
