Garmin user says affordable Amazfit wearables offer better value

A TechRadar editor who has used Garmin for years says Amazfit's cheaper devices provide core features and strong reviews, making them a smarter buy for most.

Amazfit launched in Australia in July, and the editor said the brand’s wearables, ranging from AU$89 for a basic fitness tracker to AU$899 for the most premium model, provide many of Garmin’s core watch features. That includes accurate multiband GPS, bright AMOLED displays, weeks of battery life, and a companion app that works without a subscription.

The editor highlighted three Amazfit devices as particularly good buys. The Balance 3, priced at AU$519, is a flagship model with a stainless-steel case and a 48mm dial. It offers a 3,000-nit peak brightness display, an LED flashlight, a rotating crown, and native Hyrox race profiles. The closest Garmin equivalent, the Venu 4, retails for AU$949, nearly double the price.

For those wanting a screenless wearable, the Helio Strap at AU$166 received 4 out of 5 stars in TechRadar’s review. It weighs only 20 grams and, unlike Whoop’s subscription-only model, does not require a recurring fee. The editor said it was his current choice to alternate with his main smartwatch.

The Amazfit Active 2, now discounted to AU$159.19, scored a perfect 5 stars in TechRadar’s review, beating the closest Garmin alternatives, the Forerunner 55 and Forerunner 70, which cost AU$349 and higher and received fewer stars. The editor said the Active 2’s price and performance prompted him to change his recommendations for people willing to leave the Garmin ecosystem.
