Geely Teases 2.2MW EV Charging System Promising Four-Minute Sessions

Geely did not specify whether the four-minute figure refers to the standard 10-80% state of charge or another measure, according to TechRadar. The Galaxy E5 uses an 800V architecture and Geely's next-generation Aegis Short Blade battery, which will be available in 61.52kWh and 70.01kWh capacities. Those batteries offer CLTC-rated ranges of 550 km, about 341 miles, and 635 km, about 395 miles, respectively.

The AI element is reportedly related to thermal control, allowing the high charging rate without damaging battery cells. Geely says its packs can last 3,500 charge-discharge cycles with limited degradation. More technical details are expected at an imminent Geely event.

The announcement puts Geely into a high-power charging race with other Chinese automakers. BYD has demonstrated 1.5MW Flash chargers in China and Europe, where they can fill batteries in under 10 minutes. In Europe, however, only some of BYD's most expensive models are compatible with the technology. Zeekr has also promoted 1.2MW chargers in China, which are capable of very fast top-up times.

China's charging infrastructure is under pressure to expand quickly. The TechRadar report said more than 110 million EVs are predicted to be on the roads by 2030, requiring more than 40 million charging points and approximately 300,000 high-power charging facilities. A mix of high- and lower-power charging is expected to be needed, with high power suited to motorway service stations along busy travel corridors and cheaper, lower-power options serving drivers who charge overnight at curbside.
