Gemini and ChatGPT debate best smartphone; Pixel wins after eight-minute voice exchange
ChatGPT and Gemini debated the best phone by voice; Gemini picked the Pixel, ChatGPT picked the Galaxy S26 Ultra, and the Pixel won.
The reporter set up ChatGPT in voice mode on a PC and Gemini Live on a phone. He gave both chatbots a prompt asking them to pick a favorite smartphone, make as many arguments as possible for it, debate for at least five minutes and agree on one winner. The prompt did not specify a year, price range, operating system or market. To let the two AIs hear each other, the reporter muted his headset microphone and placed the phone near the PC speaker while keeping it close enough for his microphone to pick up the phone's sound.
Gemini opened by saying the debate was over before it began. It chose the Google Pixel and praised the phone for an 'uncompromised intelligent experience' that left competitors behind. Android Authority said Gemini's reasoning sounded heavily influenced by vague marketing rather than concrete features and hardware. Gemini cited the camera, software and AI features but named only Call Screen as a specific feature.
ChatGPT chose the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. The reporter said he had wondered whether ChatGPT would choose an iPhone, but the chatbot picked another Android phone. He also noted that ChatGPT named a specific model rather than only a brand.
The debate soon became disorderly. When ChatGPT tried to praise the S26 Ultra's camera, Gemini interrupted it, then interrupted again before ChatGPT could fully explain the point. ChatGPT eventually interrupted Gemini, and the conversation stabilized. By that point, the discussion had moved from the camera to the software experience. ChatGPT praised One UI, the S Pen and DeX, and it said AI features exist in both ecosystems. Gemini criticized the ultra-saturated pictures produced by Samsung phones, but Android Authority said it did not do a good job defending Pixels against ChatGPT's claim that Pixel images are overprocessed.
Gemini then argued that Pixels are unmatched. It presented fewer specifications as a benefit, saying 'The Pixel achieves more by doing less,' and described fewer features as keeping the experience uncluttered for most users. ChatGPT accused the Pixel of creating a walled garden, which Gemini defended as synergy. Gemini eventually convinced ChatGPT that the tiebreaker would not be about hardware but about philosophy. The Pixel was crowned the winner, and the chatbots congratulated each other as worthy opponents.
