Gemini may soon call your mom for you, teardown suggests

A teardown suggests Gemini may soon place personal calls, relaying short messages to friends and family.

Android Authority said it found a “Gemini Calling” introductory screen during a teardown of the Android app’s installation package. The sample prompts on that screen included “Call Mom and tell her I will be 15 minutes late” and “Call John and ask if he is coming for dinner,” the report said. The Verge reported the findings on October 5.

Judging from those examples, the expansion would keep Gemini to short, text-message-like calls rather than full conversations. The assistant would not take over an entire catch-up call with a relative, but it could carry a quick message to someone who prefers the phone, frequently misses texts, or still keeps a landline.

Android Authority also said it found granular permissions governing Gemini’s actions inside individual apps, including settings that appear to control phone-call permissions. Those controls would let users decide which app capabilities Gemini may reach, and could give them a way to decline incoming automated calls placed by the assistant.

Google has not announced any move to bring Call for Me to personal calls, and the report carried no comment from the company. The feature described in the teardown is not confirmed for release: Android Authority noted that Google may never ship the expanded calling option or the granular per-app settings publicly, and code and interface elements found in an app package can change or be dropped before any launch.
