Gemini navigation chat arrives on Apple CarPlay

Google has started rolling out conversational Gemini navigation in Google Maps for Apple CarPlay users in the US, with a global rollout also underway.

CarPlay users can open the iOS version of Google Maps and tap a new Gemini icon toward the bottom right of the interface on the car’s infotainment display, Engadget reported. Once activated, they can ask hands-free, multi-step questions while driving. Google describes the feature as a conversational way to find stops on the go, report traffic disruptions and get information about places, according to The Verge and Engadget. The Verge said users can ask for recommendations on places to visit and then prompt Gemini to direct them there while avoiding toll roads. Android Authority reported that drivers can also use it to find alternate routes, locate a place to refuel or get advice about new destinations to add to the route. Engadget gave the example of asking which park is famous for gorgeous views overlooking the city.

The reports described availability in slightly different terms. The Verge said the feature is available today for US drivers and that Google said the rollout is happening globally too. Android Authority said access should be available now across the US, with a global rollout similarly in progress. Engadget said the rollout is starting today for CarPlay users in the US and throughout the world, while noting the update may take a few days to reach a given device. Specific regional availability was not detailed in the reports; The Verge said it had asked Google for those details.

The CarPlay update follows Google’s announcement a day earlier of Personal Intelligence features for Gemini in Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, according to The Verge; Engadget reported that Google had begun rolling out Gemini Personal Intelligence to Android Auto users. When enabled, the feature lets the chatbot pull information from other Google apps, including Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube and Search, to personalize responses. Google says Personal Intelligence improves Gemini’s reasoning and lets it deliver more specific details tied to a user’s questions and prompts, according to Engadget. Google’s CarPlay announcement did not mention those Personal Intelligence features, The Verge reported. The Verge said it had asked Google whether CarPlay users will also receive the personalization update.
