Generalist AI reportedly raises $200M led by 8VC
Generalist AI reportedly raised $200M led by 8VC after launching Gen-1.5 for robot learning.
Axios reported, citing a source, that the investment also included several existing investors whose names were not disclosed. Generalist’s previous $400 million round in June included Nvidia Corp., Bezos Expeditions and more than a half-dozen other participants.
The reported raise comes about a week after Generalist debuted Gen-1.5, its newest AI model designed to power robotic arms. The company says the model can significantly reduce the time required to create factory automation workflows. Historically, developers had to manually program robotic arms for each task and update the code in response to even minor operational changes. Some robots ship with AI models that reduce the need for custom code, but teaching an AI-powered robot a new task often requires fine-tuning its neural network, which can be time-consuming. Generalist says Gen-1.5 offers a more convenient alternative: users can teach a robot a task by demonstrating how it is performed with their hands. The model records the demonstration through the robot’s built-in cameras or sensors attached to the user’s hands, and can also learn from clips of simulated robots.
Generalist tested Gen-1.5 across 10 sample tasks. According to the company, the model achieved an average task completion rate of 59% when given a single example, rising to 83% when users provided a few additional examples. Generalist says Gen-1.5 is the first AI model capable of learning a wide range of robotics tasks from one or a few examples. The model can also autonomously refine its workflows; during testing, it occasionally chose a different tool than the one it was instructed to use.
The Axios report did not specify how the company plans to use the new funding. However, training Gen-1.5 took more than eight months, according to Generalist, which suggests a sizable portion of the capital may go toward AI infrastructure. Nvidia’s participation in the June round hints that the startup could use the chipmaker’s graphics cards, including the Jetson line optimized for robots.
Editor's Summary
Generalist AI has reportedly raised $200 million in a round led by 8VC, roughly a week after introducing Gen-1.5, an AI model that helps robots learn tasks from a small number of demonstrations. The funding builds on a $400 million raise in June that included Nvidia and Bezos Expeditions, reflecting sustained investor interest in AI-driven robotics.
