GitHub commits double in four months amid AI-driven code surge

GitHub says monthly commits surged from 1.4 billion to 2.9 billion since April, causing capacity failures that led to a seven-hour outage.

The developer platform said that since April, monthly commits have grown from 1.4 billion to 2.9 billion. That growth, according to GitHub, explained the pressure on its systems but did not excuse the outages. The sharp increase in code changes is widely linked to the growing volume of code produced by AI tools.

GitHub outlined technical fixes to prevent future outages, including reviewing CPU and memory alerts to identify components that could fail under high traffic and applying consistent retry limits, retry budgets, and variable timeouts across service-to-service interactions to avoid retry storms and cascading load.

While these measures address the immediate infrastructure issues, they do not address the underlying trend of increasing AI-generated code. With companies like Anthropic and OpenAI continuing to expand their AI coding tools, GitHub, as the default home for software projects, is likely to keep facing such pressure.
