GM gives 2027 Silverado and Sierra new minimalist UI, keeps phone casting

GM's 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra will get new minimalist digital-display interfaces, while retaining Apple and Android phone casting, Ars Technica reports.

The new interface takes a more minimalist approach than GM has used in the past. After a demo, Ars Technica reported that the automaker appears to have listened to constructive feedback to improve the products. Unlike GM’s electric vehicles, the trucks still let drivers cast an Apple or Android phone to the infotainment system, the report said.

Ars Technica said GM showed video of the main instrument cluster, which presents gauges and information to the driver, but did not provide screenshots that could be published. The report described the design as restrained and lacking visual noise. The background is always black, and local dimming technology is intended to keep it dark even at night.

The system offers several views. One includes simple half-moon dials for speed and engine rpm, with a user-configurable zone on the right side of the display. In that zone, drivers can browse music or audio feeds, display trip information, or view turn-by-turn directions.

Another view is a driver assist display. It uses green as the highlight color to show when Super Cruise is active, and it presents a representation of what the vehicle’s fused sensors are seeing around it, according to Ars Technica. A third view is designed for off-road driving and shows various angles and differential settings. A fourth view is for towing.

The report focused on the user interface rather than other changes to the 2027 trucks. It noted that the trucks retain phone casting even as GM’s electric vehicles have moved in a different direction. The new displays are part of the model-year update for the Silverado and Sierra.
