The interface will eventually expand across GM’s gas, diesel, and electric vehicles, Android Authority reported. That planned expansion suggests Android Auto still has a place in the company’s future, despite GM’s earlier plans to move away from phone projection.

GM’s breakup with Android Auto has been anything but clean, according to the report. The company first dropped phone projection from newer electric vehicles, then said the same strategy would eventually reach its gas-powered lineup. GM later softened that stance, saying Android Auto and CarPlay would remain available in gas-powered vehicles for the “foreseeable future.”

The latest trucks now suggest that the future could be longer and more interesting than expected, the report said. In the new system, Android Auto is not merely surviving the redesign. It is becoming more tightly integrated with GM’s own software.

The new infotainment interface was unveiled for the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. Android Auto can now share the screen with native GM functions, including vehicle status and trailering information. That split-screen arrangement keeps Android Auto visible alongside the automaker’s own features rather than treating it as a separate or temporary add-on.

GM’s move follows its earlier efforts to drop phone projection from newer EVs and its later decision to keep Android Auto and CarPlay in gas-powered vehicles for the “foreseeable future.” The report frames the latest trucks as evidence that Android Auto’s role in GM vehicles may extend beyond the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, with the interface eventually reaching gasoline, diesel, and electric models.
