GM Reverses Course, Adds Split-Screen CarPlay and Android Auto to 2027 Silverado and Sierra

General Motors will offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in a split-screen layout on a revamped infotainment system debuting in the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, partly reversing its plan to drop the phone-mirroring software.

The new trucks have 60 inches of screen real estate, including a display on which a front-seat passenger can stream video. GM uses that space to show CarPlay and Android Auto in a split-screen format, so drivers can reach those functions while vehicle gauges remain visible. They will not have to switch between screens, which may help reduce distraction. GM told Bloomberg it worked with Apple and Google on the approach, Engadget reported.

"We were one of the first automakers to bring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto into our gas-powered vehicles. Now with the new UI, we've integrated the experience more deeply than ever before in our light-duty pickups," Mike Wahlstrom, GM's executive director of software product management, said in a Q&A. "People really like CarPlay and Android Auto because they're so user-centric. We heard from customers that they want that same simplicity while still having quick access to everything their vehicle can do. Our next-gen UI brings those together in a cohesive way."

The automaker announced three years earlier that it would remove CarPlay and Android Auto from electric vehicles in favor of a bespoke infotainment system that uses Gemini, and it planned to do the same in gas-powered vehicles. Among its stated reasons was the potential to monetize its infotainment system through subscriptions. The more pressing concern, however, was that CarPlay and Android Auto typically take over the display, a problem for automakers when the same screen is used to show vehicle gauges, as is often the case with EVs. The split-screen format may resolve that issue.

GM has not said whether it will bring CarPlay back to EVs; its Q&A about the revamped interface does not mention EVs at all. Its infotainment system still works with some phone apps, and GM EVs that lack CarPlay can access Apple Music.
