Godox A2 brings xenon flash to phones, starting with iPhone

Godox A2, an $85 magnetic xenon flash for phones, launches for iPhone only as Android support remains under development.

Unlike the LED flashes used on most phones, the A2 uses a xenon tube intended to produce the high-intensity light associated with a dedicated camera flash. It attaches magnetically, relying on a connection similar to Apple’s MagSafe. Android Authority reported that the accessory was introduced with iPhone compatibility first, and that buyers should not expect an Android version in the near future.

The magnetic requirement also limits which Android phones could use the accessory once support arrives. Android Authority said it would not work with every Android device. Native magnetic support includes Pixel models since the 10 series and the Motorola Edge 70 Max, while Qi2-ready phones such as many Samsung models would need magnetic cases.

Android phones once led with built-in xenon flashes, but the industry abandoned the approach more than a decade ago. Most current phones rely on LED flashes, which do not deliver the same intensity or image quality as xenon flash, according to Android Authority. The A2 is aimed at restoring that type of flash through an add-on rather than a built-in component.
