Google acknowledges bug that splits group chats in Messages app

Google acknowledges a bug in Google Messages that splits group chats, and says a fix is on the way.

The bug causes group chats to suddenly split into separate threads. When someone replies to the group, a new group chat is created with the same participants but without the past message history, making it hard to keep track of conversations. Reports first appeared on Google's support forums three weeks ago.

Users have voiced their frustration on Reddit and other platforms. One commenter wrote "I am so done with this happening!" while others described the problem as "frustrating," "irritating," and "weird." The bug seems to affect multiple phone models, and many of the users reporting it said they had recently switched phones.

A Google representative posted on Reddit that the team is aware of the issue and actively looking into it. The representative encouraged affected users to send a feedback report through the Google Messages app, including the hashtag #splittingthreads to help identify the problem.

No workarounds have been reported so far, according to TechRadar. Affected users can only report the issue and wait for a fix. TechRadar noted that Google took its time in responding to the issue, as the first reports appeared three weeks ago.
