Google Adds Map Tool to Gemini on Mobile, Tests @ for Skills
Google has added a Map tool to Gemini on Android and iOS for location-based prompts, and a beta version of the Google app replaces the forward slash with @ for skills and connectors.
The Map tool appears only on mobile, at the end of the carousel that also includes Photos, Camera, Avatar, Files, Drive and Notebooks, Android Authority reported. According to 9to5Google, it has now been widely rolled out on both Android and iOS. Android Authority first spotted evidence of the feature in February.
When a user taps Map, their location appears on a live map with a circular focus area. Users can zoom in and out, and a magnifying glass in the top right lets them search for a specific location. An X button next to the search button exits the map, and an “Explore this area” button appears at the bottom. Tapping that button adds “Map Area” to the prompt, so the user can write prompts focused on that location.
The second change was found in the latest beta version of the Google app, version 17.63, Android Authority reported. When a user types a forward slash into the prompt box, a note appears saying “/ is now @. Access your skills, connectors and more from a single place.” Google is replacing Gems with skills, which are scheduled to roll out on October 13, and connectors is the new name for connected apps.
Typing @ opens a box that shows the user’s skills and an option to create new ones. The user’s connectors appear below the skills. Unlike the Map tool, this change has not been widely rolled out yet, according to Android Authority.
The changes come after Google rolled out Guided Vision for Gemini Live to help blind and low-vision users, and after Gemini gained the ability to connect with Wallet to access boarding passes, event tickets and more.
