Google Adds Message Alerts to Pixel 11 Pro HiLight LED in Android 17 QPR2 Beta 6.1

Android 17 QPR2 Beta 6.1 adds message support to the Pixel 11 Pro's HiLight LED, making it glow twice for messages from favorite contacts. The beta is available now, with a stable release expected in December.

The HiLight LED was marketed as a highlight feature of the Pixel 11 Pro. According to Android Authority, it glows when the user receives a call or when Gemini is working in the background. The feature has also been reported to weaken the Pixel’s flash. Google cannot fix that flash issue, Android Authority said, but the company is working to make HiLight more useful for Pixel users.

The new message option appears under the “Manage Experiences” section in Settings > System > HiLight. Users can also manually enable or disable HiLight for calls and messages for individual contacts by opening the contact’s page.

Android Authority said the message integration follows evidence spotted a day earlier pointing to message support and new HiLight colors. The QPR2 Beta 6.1 update does not add any new colors for the HiLight LED. Those colors might arrive in a later update.

The addition of message alerts comes months after HiLight launched. Android Authority described the delay as surprising and said it was even more surprising that the new colors are not yet available. The report said Google needs to pick up the pace on rolling out new HiLight features, or users might start viewing HiLight as a novelty instead of an actually useful feature.

The beta is now available for the Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Android Authority said users can install it to try the new HiLight options. A stable QPR2 build is expected in December.
