Google and Cathay Pacific Expand AI Trial That Cuts Warming Contrails by 40%

Google and Cathay Pacific are testing AI-guided altitude shifts to reduce persistent contrails, with early flights showing a roughly 40% drop in warming impact.

Contrails are thin streams of ice crystals that form behind aircraft flying through cold, humid air. Some persist and spread into cloud-like patterns that trap heat that would otherwise escape into space. Contrails are estimated to account for around one-third of aviation’s total climate impact.

Google’s approach uses AI algorithms to identify areas of cold, humid air where warming contrails are likely to form, then suggests slight altitude changes so flights can avoid those zones. The company said in a blog post that the adjustments are similar to maneuvers pilots already perform around turbulence. Google also said the recommended route tweaks do not affect passengers or flight safety and are consistent with routine operational changes to flight paths.

According to TechRadar, the rerouting decisions combine satellite imagery, weather forecasts and Google’s prediction technology. The goal is to relay information to the cockpit as early as possible through in-flight Wi-Fi, described as working “without interrupting standard cockpit workflows.”

The expansion to Cathay Pacific also involves Contrails.org, a nonprofit that promotes contrail mitigation. The organization’s figures indicate that adjusting the routes of just 5% of flights could avoid up to 80% of contrail-related warming. The Asia-Pacific region is currently the fastest-growing aviation market in the world, according to the report.

“Contrail mitigation remains one of the most immediately available, scalable, and cost-effective ways to reduce aviation’s climate footprint, and it can get started now, with today’s aircrafts and fuel,” Google said.
