Google Announces Fitbit Edge, a Mid-Price Tracker Between Pixel Watch 5 and Fitbit Air
Google has announced the Fitbit Edge, a fitness tracker positioned between the Pixel Watch 5 and Fitbit Air. It has a 1.34-inch OLED display, week-long battery life, and more health sensors than the Air, at about half the price of the Pixel Watch 5.
Ars Technica described the Edge as essentially a new Charge 6 with a Pixel Watch-like design. The device has a pill-shaped 1.34-inch OLED touch display inside a slender aluminum frame rated IP68 (5 ATM) for water and dust protection. Google says the screen has 46 percent more viewable area than the Charge 6. It is very close in overall size to the Fitbit Air and uses the same magnetic charging puck.
The Edge includes more health sensors than the Fitbit Air, but it does not offer all the apps and features of the Pixel Watch 5. It costs about half as much as the Pixel Watch 5, according to Ars Technica. The report said the tracker slots between the two devices in Google's lineup.
The Edge works with Android or iPhones through the Google Health app and can run for about seven days on a charge. When it is away from a phone, it can still follow activity all week, with support for seven days of full health data storage or 30 days of basic data. The week-long battery life does not include always-on display mode. If that mode is turned on, battery life drops to about two days, barely longer than the Pixel Watch 5.
