Google begins early preview of Gemini’s Call for Me on Pixel 11

Google has begun an early preview of Call for Me, a Gemini feature that lets paid US subscribers with a Pixel 11 and the Phone by Google public beta delegate business calls to AI, with live transcripts and user takeover.

Once a user asks Gemini in the Gemini app to make a call, the AI can dial the business, introduce itself, navigate automated phone menus, wait on hold and handle the conversation with a person who answers. The feature uses the user’s own phone number and places the call directly from the phone. Google said Gemini can share personal information the user approves during such calls, allowing it to take a broader set of actions.

Google listed tasks including calling a store to ask whether a product is in stock, making a restaurant reservation, rescheduling an appointment or placing items on hold. Users can follow the call through a live transcript and take over the conversation at any point, Google said. The company said “real-world conversations are nuanced,” describing the limited start as a way to get the experience right before a broader launch.

The launch extends Google’s earlier work with automated calling. The company demonstrated Google Assistant calling a salon to make a reservation at an I/O developer conference, complete with “umm’s” and “ahh’s” to sound natural. Pixel owners have also had Call Assist tools including Hold for Me, which waits on hold and alerts the user when a person returns; Direct My Call, which displays menu options; Talk to a Live Rep; and Call Screen.

TechCrunch reported that Google rolled out “Ask for Me” last year, allowing Gemini to call businesses to ask about pricing or services. The Verge described a similar earlier “Call for me” feature that could call local businesses to check for a product, but did not offer users the ability to take over the call. Android Authority said the new Call for Me combines existing tools: it uses Direct My Call for complex menus and Hold for Me when it is placed on hold.

The feature is limited to Pixel 11 for now. It requires the beta version of Google’s Phone app for Android, and Google is starting with a small group of users. The Verge and Android Authority both reported that the early preview is available to “Gemini paid subscribers enrolled in the Phone by Google Public Beta on Pixel 11 in the US.”

Other companies are also developing AI calling agents. TechCrunch said AI agents such as Meta’s Muse and Instinct can make calls on users’ behalf. The Verge reported that Meta is working on a similar automated phone call feature for its Muse AI agent, though those calls reportedly might be made by a human behind the scenes.
