Google Begins Removing Assistant From Android Phones in Favor of Gemini

Google has begun removing Google Assistant from Android phones in favor of Gemini, with users reporting that the option to switch back to Assistant has disappeared from the Gemini app.

The shift comes almost two months after Google issued a timeline for phasing out Assistant. Google began emailing users last month to warn them that it was killing off Google Assistant on phones in favor of Gemini, Android Authority reported. The company said at the time that the process would start on September 4 and continue for a few weeks. Users are now beginning to lose Assistant on their Android phones.

9to5Google reported that users no longer see the 'Switch to Google Assistant' option in the Gemini app's account menu. Android Authority said its author could not see the option on a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, a POCO F9 Ultra, or a vivo X300 Pro after updating the Google app to the latest beta version on the Play Store, version 17.62. Some Redditors also reported that they no longer see the option to switch to Google Assistant.

The missing menu item means that, for those users, the Gemini app no longer provides that in-app route to return to Google Assistant. The reports focus on Android phones, where the replacement of Assistant with Gemini is underway. The option's removal was noted in the Gemini app's account menu, according to 9to5Google and Android Authority's checks.

Google's earlier messages described the change as a phase-out of Assistant on phones in favor of Gemini. The timeline called for the process to begin on September 4 and continue for a few weeks. The recent reports show that the removal is now visible to at least some Android users.
