The news was announced by Mishaal Rahman, Google's Android Community Engagement Manager, in a post on the r/Android subreddit. Google is calling this the first version of the advanced flow and says it is rolling out gradually, so users may not see the new setting immediately. This means the advanced flow is being introduced in stages rather than all at once.

The new verification process was first reported in March, when it was revealed that Android would introduce a new process for users who still want to sideload apps from unverified developers. Under the advanced flow, users are required to wait 24 hours before completing installation, and the device will restart as part of the process. ADB installations remain exempt from the verification requirement, according to the report.

Rahman's post also fills in several important details about how the system works in practice. Google has not specified which countries will be subject to the developer verification requirement when it takes effect on September 30, though the rollout of the advanced flow is already underway.
