Google Expands Android Earthquake Alerts to More Than 200 Regions

Google is expanding Android Earthquake Alerts to over 200 regions and adding new details to Be Ready alerts.

The system issues alerts based on estimated shaking intensity. Be Aware provides a straightforward alert for estimated light shaking, letting users know an earthquake has been detected nearby. Be Ready is a detailed alert for stronger shaking, telling users to prepare to take action. Take Action is a full-screen alert for moderate to heavy shaking, giving immediate advice on how to stay safe.

Google said it has built out the Be Ready alert with new guidance. The enhanced alert will include estimated earthquake magnitude, epicenter information, maps showing affected areas and additional safety guidance, according to a Google blog post cited by Slashdot. In the coming months, users will see a map with a radius of where shaking has been detected, the estimated magnitude, action they can take and a button to learn more about the earthquake as information comes in.

The expansion follows the system's earlier availability in 98 regions. Google said the alerts are designed to give users time to take action before potentially dangerous shaking begins.
