Google expands personalized Gemini AI to Android Auto and Google built-in cars
Google is adding Personal Intelligence to Gemini in cars, drawing on Gmail, Calendar, Maps and Photos.
Google offered several examples of how the system works. A driver heading to the airport can ask Gemini about a flight status, and the assistant can find flight details in a Gmail confirmation message before looking up the status. A driver can also ask Gemini to take them to a doctor’s appointment instead of entering directions manually, or ask it to find the car wash from a photo taken last week and navigate there.
Gemini came to Android Auto last year and was rolled out to cars with Google built-in in April, The Verge reported. Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo and Polestar are among automakers that have shipped newer cars with Google built-in, which supports native Android apps.
Google says it will connect apps to Gemini only if the Personal Intelligence setting is enabled. It will also share personalized responses only when the user’s phone is connected to the car. Without Personal Intelligence, Google says navigation, music, calls and questions still work in the car, but the answers are not tailored to the user.
Personal Intelligence is rolling out to Android Auto beginning Oct. 20, with support for cars with Google built-in expected in the coming months, Google said.
