Google Firebase Bug Crashes Thousands of iOS Apps; Fix Rolled Out

A bug in Google Analytics for Firebase caused thousands of iOS apps to crash at launch on Sept. 29, 2026, according to Android Authority. Google deployed a fix within a couple of hours, but caching kept some apps crashing for up to four hours, and crash rates remained above normal.

The issue affected apps that rely on Firebase for backend development and analytics, the report said. Because thousands of iOS apps use the Google-owned platform, many began crashing around the same time. App crashes are common, but they usually follow new software versions, new smartphones, or app updates, and they tend to be fairly limited in scope. This incident was different because it hit a shared dependency used by many apps at once.

Developers posted panicked messages on the Google Firebase GitHub issue tracker as they tried to determine what had gone wrong. One developer said they burned through a large number of AI tokens while debugging their app because they believed they had broken something themselves. Several others suspected Firebase was responsible but said they could do little beyond reporting the problem to Google and waiting for a fix while crash numbers rose by the minute.

Some apps recorded crash numbers more than 5,000 times higher than normal, according to Android Authority.

Google fixed the bug a couple of hours after the crashes began, and developers began to see crash numbers fall. The company warned, however, that caching could cause some apps to continue crashing for up to four hours after the fix was deployed. As of about an hour before the Android Authority report was published, some developers said crashes had dropped significantly but were still much higher than usual.

Google has not fully explained what caused the problem, and the Firebase Status Dashboard did not show any logged incidents, the report said. The company may still be working to fully resolve the issue and identify its root cause.

Android Authority said it had reached out to Google for comment and would update the story if it received a response.
