Google Home Mini Can Be Factory Reset in Minutes Using Only Its Physical Buttons

The guide arrives after Google stopped producing the Nest Home Mini and the Nest Audio. The company introduced a new smart home speaker earlier this year and confirmed to Engadget that it would no longer make new units of the two older models, though it will keep supporting them with regular software updates, security patches and customer care. The original Google Home Mini, which has been on the market for almost nine years, is among the discontinued devices still in working order.

For the first-generation Google Home Mini, owners flip the device over and find the reset button on the bottom, just below the power cord, where a small circle is etched into the base. Pressing and holding that button for about five seconds starts the reset; the button must be held for another 10 seconds until a confirmation chime sounds.

The second-generation Nest Mini looks nearly identical but uses a different sequence. The microphone on/off switch on the side is turned off first, which makes the LED lights pulse orange. The user then presses and holds the center of the device, where the top lights sit, for about five seconds to begin the reset and keeps holding for another 10 seconds until the chime confirms completion.

On display models such as the Nest Hub, both volume buttons on the back of the device are pressed and held at the same time for roughly 10 seconds. The screen shows that the reset is running, and the device should be given a few moments to restart fully before any setup is attempted.

A factory reset permanently removes personal data, Wi-Fi credentials and linked Google accounts, and disconnects the device from every member of the household; the action cannot be undone. Engadget advises owners to first consider whether a simple reboot will do, since unplugging the device for a minute clears minor glitches without erasing anything.

To bring the speaker back online, the owner opens the Google Home app, taps the "+" icon and selects Set up device, then follows the in-app prompts to rejoin a Wi-Fi network and link a Google account.
