Google Launches 'Preferred Sources' Button to Help Publishers Counter AI-Driven Traffic Loss
Google introduces a 'Preferred Sources' button for publishers, letting readers favor their sites in Search, Discover, and Google News as a response to AI-driven traffic declines.
According to TechCrunch, the company hopes the button will make it easier for readers to find links from sites they know and trust when searching or using Google's AI to learn about a topic. Google said that since the feature began rolling out in May, users have already selected more than 345,000 unique sources through this method.
Google's earlier studies found that people are twice as likely to click through to a preferred source when it is available. By giving publishers these tools, Google is seeking to ease the damage that the rapid growth of AI-driven search features has caused to businesses that rely on traffic.
The company also announced that readers will soon be able to customize their Discover feed in natural language. In Google's app, users will tap a three-dot menu in the feed and tell Google which topics they want to see more or less of, helping refine the feed in real time.
