Google launches Universal Cart AI shopping tool in the US ahead of holidays

Google launched Universal Cart in the U.S., an AI cart across Search and Gemini that saves items from multiple retailers and tracks prices.

The tool is a 'universal' digital cart designed to work across Google platforms, according to The Verge. Users can find and add products through the Gemini app and Google Search AI Mode, and the items remain saved in the same cart. Google plans to integrate Universal Cart with Gmail and YouTube, but has not announced a timeline.

Universal Cart sends notifications about price drops and restocks for saved items, sparing users from checking each retailer's website. It can also display relevant promotional codes beside saved products, The Verge reported. Shoppers can pay from the cart using Google Wallet or transfer items to the merchant's own cart for direct checkout.

TechCrunch reported that checkout is tied to Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, an open standard introduced earlier this year to help AI agents and retailers work together across shopping journeys, including checkout. ZDNet reported that the cart is built on Google's Shopping Graph, which has more than 60 billion continually refreshed product listings, allowing it to check for price changes and inventory in the background. With Google Wallet, Universal Cart can analyze the perks of saved credit cards and help users choose a payment method, and it can identify relevant promo codes. Purchases made through Google Pay can be completed in a few taps within the cart, or shoppers can move items to merchant carts and finish on the merchant's site. In either case, the merchant is the seller of record and provides order communication and customer support.

Google also introduced a When to Buy Guide, a new report that analyzes historical promotional patterns, search trends and discount data from U.S. merchants, according to ZDNet. This year's insights include the best time to buy signature scents, why shoppers should reconsider buying a handbag on Black Friday, and why buying travel gear such as suitcases early can be better for early birds. Google said in a press release that it is building the future of commerce on two fronts: "Unlocking agentic capabilities that act on your behalf and designing practical tools that give shoppers confidence and control." The company said Universal Cart is built for the second track, mirroring how people shop across Google without losing track of items, savings or trusted merchants.

The launch comes as competition in AI-assisted shopping increases. The Verge reported that Google rivals including OpenAI and Meta have launched agentic AI assistants that can shop online on a user's behalf, and Shopify recently announced it is opening its platform to allow more AI agents to browse and purchase from Shopify listings. TechCrunch reported that Amazon, OpenAI and other rivals have added agentic commerce features as companies seek ways to make chatbots useful beyond answering questions. Google already offers conversational product discovery in Search's AI Mode and a 'Let Google Call' tool that uses an AI agent to contact nearby stores and check whether an item is in stock.
