Google launches universal Gemini agent for work tasks

Google unveiled a universal Gemini agent for enterprise work, assignable from one interface across Workspace and Slack.

The agent will be available inside the Gemini Enterprise app, where users can chat with it and assign it work. Google says it operates directly within Workspace apps including Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets and Calendar, and can be reached from a mobile device, a desktop computer, the web, or third-party applications such as Slack and Microsoft 365. Because it runs in the cloud, the agent maintains the same context across all connected devices, the company said.

Google described two further ways the agent can operate. It can work with job-specific sub-agents to complete tasks, and it can act as a "coworker agent" with a dedicated identity and its own "@agents.company.com" email address. The agent automatically performs tasks using the AI model that best fits each job, according to Google.

The Gemini agent is currently available only to enterprise customers in private preview. That limited release still offers a glimpse of Google's broader vision for an AI assistant that can answer questions and perform work from a single window, The Verge reported.

Google previously launched a consumer-facing agent, Gemini Spark, in May. Subscribers can use it to perform tasks across Workspace and on the web, but it is reached through a separate interface within the Gemini app rather than the one-stop interface described for the enterprise agent.
