Google Maps now shows 'Lake America' for US users after Trump executive order
Google Maps has started labeling Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for US users after Trump signed an executive order, while Canadian users still see the original name.
Google said in an announcement that it will display the name designated by the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). The outlet notes the move is tied to a tariff dispute between the two nations. In July, the US imposed additional 50% tariffs on Canadian goods including electronics, vehicles, auto parts, and steel under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930. Canada retaliated with matching tariffs, calling for “dollar-for-dollar” parity.
Days after Canada’s announcement, Trump ordered the renaming. Over the weekend, he posted an AI-generated video on Truth Social showing him kicking a Lake Ontario sign and installing one reading “Lake America.” In response, Canada installed a large physical billboard on the shoreline reading “Lake Ontario, Always and Forever.”
