Google Meet and Microsoft Teams Enable Cross-Platform Meeting-Room Calls

Google Meet and Microsoft Teams now let Android-based meeting-room hardware join each other's calls.

The feature began rolling out on October 1 and should reach eligible Google Workspace customers within one to three days, Android Authority reported.

Google previewed the interoperability feature last month, presenting it as a way to let Meet and Teams hardware work together. The report said the aim was to remove some of the usual barriers between the two platforms.

The report described a practical scenario in which someone walks into a meeting room only to find that the call is on Microsoft Teams while the room is set up for Google Meet. Joining a video call could become unnecessarily complicated in that situation, the report said. With the feature, the room's Android-based Meet hardware can join the Teams call instead.

Similarly, a Microsoft Teams Room running Android can join a Google Meet call. That applies when a company primarily uses Meet but receives a Teams invite, or when the room hardware and the meeting invitation use different services. According to the report, users would not have to reach for a laptop or switch rooms just because the participants are using a different video conferencing service.

The interoperability applies to supported Android-based meeting-room hardware and to eligible Google Workspace customers during the rollout, according to Android Authority. It does not apply to all meeting-room systems or all customers immediately, based on the rollout details provided.

The rollout began on October 1, with an expected one-to-three-day window for eligible Google Workspace customers. Android Authority did not provide a full list of supported hardware models or a complete eligibility list in the report.

The update follows Google's preview of the feature last month, when the capability was described as allowing Meet and Teams hardware to work together. The new rollout makes that capability available on the specified Android-based systems.

For organizations, the change addresses a room-and-platform mismatch in which the meeting room and the meeting link may belong to different video conferencing services. The feature is limited to supported Android-based hardware and eligible Workspace accounts, according to Android Authority.
