Google Messages rolls out custom chat backgrounds and bubble colors
Google Messages has finally introduced per-chat customization, letting users change bubble colors and wallpapers. The feature requires RCS and is visible only to the user.
The feature, announced in the post, allows users to choose from curated wallpaper categories such as "animals" and "space" or upload an image from their gallery. Bubble colors can be set manually or automatically adjusted to match the selected wallpaper.
To apply the new look, users open Google Messages, select a chat, and tap the person's or group's name in the top bar or the three-dot menu. From there, tapping "Chat theme" opens a color palette and wallpaper options, including a "Choose a photo" button.
After picking a wallpaper, users can tap "Next" to preview it and then "Apply" to confirm. The same steps can be repeated for other chats.
The customization options require RCS to be enabled. Changes are visible only to the user, not to the people on the other end of the conversation.
