Google offers free AI Pro for a year: 3 ways to save $240
Google is giving some users a free AI Pro subscription, including a full year for college students and free months with new hardware purchases.
The AI Pro plan is aimed at heavy AI users rather than casual chatters, and many people may not need it. However, for those who regularly push AI to its limits and rely heavily on Google's ecosystem, the premium tier can deliver value.
The first way to get free access is through education. College students can claim one free year of Google AI Pro. Applicants must be at least 16 years old, enrolled at a higher education institution in a country or region where Google AI Pro is supported, and have a personal Google account plus a Google Pay account with payment attached. Student status is verified through SheerID.
The second way involves purchasing hardware. A Chromebook Plus comes with 12 months of AI Pro, a standard Chromebook with three months, and a Pixel 11 with six months. Both new and existing Google One users are eligible for this promotion. ZDNet points out that the most affordable Chromebook Plus is the Acer 515 at $420, and since the AI subscription alone costs $240, the hardware deal offers good value.
The third way is through family sharing. Up to five family members of someone who has a Google AI Pro membership can receive "select AI Pro benefits and features" at no extra cost. Not every benefit transfers, for example, the offer does not include YouTube Premium Lite, but it does include AI features and 5TB of storage benefits.
