Google Opens Gemini Skills to Free Accounts as Gems Prepare to Retire

A new Google Support page confirms Gemini Skills are now available to free accounts, ahead of Gems migrating to Skills starting November 17.

A newly published Google Support page confirms that Skills are now open to all Gemini users aged 18 or older. Google has dropped the requirement for a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription, so the feature is available to anyone with a personal Google account. Free users who had been using Gems and were unsure how to reach them after the transition will find Skills in the same place they found Gems, under Settings and then Skills.

The change follows a banner that Android Authority spotted inside Gemini a day earlier, announcing the end of Gems as they are currently known. That banner stated that Gems will migrate to Skills beginning November 17, but it did not say how free account holders would access their Gems after the migration. The support page now live addresses that gap.

Alongside the wider availability, the same documentation describes new capabilities for Skills. Users will be able to import files from Google Drive or Gemini Notebook, and they will be able to share the Skills they create with other users.

Android Authority reported that the update resolves the uncertainty for free-tier users who had built Gems and faced the November 17 migration date without a stated path to their existing setups. The report did not give separate release dates for the file-import and sharing features.
