Google Opens Preview of a Linux Terminal for Googlebook, Targeting AI-Assisted App Development

Google has released a preview Linux terminal for Googlebook that runs in an isolated virtual machine, supporting Python, Node.js, Git and SSH for development and AI workflows.

The terminal supports tools such as Python, Node.js, Git and SSH. According to Google, it runs inside an isolated virtual machine, an arrangement meant to protect Googlebook OS from commands that could damage it. Users can grant AI tools, including Google's Antigravity, administrator privileges inside that environment, a step the company says does not give those tools unrestricted access to the machine itself.

File access follows the same permission model. Folders are shared with the Linux virtual machine only after a user grants permission, and a one-click reset lets users return the environment to a clean state without deleting files stored on the main system.

Google has also described what it plans to add. The roadmap includes Linux GUI applications, USB debugging, dynamic scaling of memory and storage, GPU and NPU acceleration, and better support for long-running tasks. The terminal is available now in preview.
