Google Phone App Returns Contacts Tab to Bottom Bar in Beta

Google Phone beta returns Contacts tab to bottom bar, reversing last year's sidebar move, Android Authority reports.

In a report published Sept. 29, 2026, Android Authority said a couple of users on the GApps and Leaks Telegram page saw the Contacts tab at the bottom of the page. The publication said it could surface the bottom bar tab in the latest beta, version 240.0.98, running on a Pixel 9. It could not see the tab on a couple of other Android phones with the beta installed, which the report said suggested a gradual rollout.

Android Authority reported that users on the stable version of Phone by Google still see only two bottom bar tabs. The Contacts option remains accessible in the current interface, but it is hidden behind the sidebar or hamburger menu in the top-left corner. There is also a Contacts chip directly below the search bar, but it does not show a full list; it filters recent calls to show only calls to and from people saved in the contacts list.

The report said the appearance of Contacts between the Home and Keypad tabs is encouraging, but it is difficult to say when the tab will be widely available because it is currently limited to the latest Phone app beta. Android Authority said it had exclusively revealed a few days earlier that the tab would return to the bottom bar.

Google moved the Contacts tab to the sidebar last year, and this beta update brings it back to its original place. Android Authority said users can try sideloading the latest public beta of the Phone app from APKMirror. It remains unclear when the relocated Contacts tab will appear more widely to users of Google's dialer app.
