Google Photos integrates Gemini Spark for automated photo management in US

Google announced the integration on Thursday, with Google Photos lead Shimrit Ben-Yar sharing details on X and confirming that the capability will roll out over the next few weeks to Gemini AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S. in English, according to TechCrunch. Android Authority separately reported that the feature is currently available only in the U.S. to users aged 18 or older with a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription and is being rolled out gradually.

With the integration, Spark can perform multi-stage workflows in Google Photos. A single prompt can ask it to edit and enhance photos, extract text from images, create summaries of events or visual stories, and share selected images with friends and family. Users can also establish recurring tasks, such as having Spark scan the photo library every weekend, find the best pictures of children or pets, add them to a shared album, and automatically send that album to chosen contacts.

To use the feature, users first need to connect Google Photos to Gemini, toggle on Spark in the top corner of the Gemini app, and then enter their prompt, according to the reports.

TechCrunch framed the announcement as part of the AI industry’s broader attempt to convince consumers that AI services are useful. The publication noted that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told Bloomberg this week that the industry has struggled to communicate the benefits of AI, which has caused backlash around the world, and that Google faces competitive pressure to promote every AI upgrade even when the immediate convenience is limited.

Google did not say whether or when the integration would reach international markets.
