Google Photos may soon let users copy or download album QR codes

A teardown of Google Photos version 7.93.0 shows Copy and Download buttons for QR code album sharing, along with a new prompt introducing the revamped Collections tab.

The app has supported link-based album sharing for some time and added QR codes last year, but it does not allow users to save the code directly to a device. Google currently advises users to capture a screenshot of the QR code and pass that image to their contacts.

According to the teardown, the updated interface places pill-shaped Copy and Download buttons directly beneath the code. Selecting Copy places the code on the clipboard so it can be pasted into a messaging app, while tapping Download stores a copy of the QR code on the phone. Android Authority said the change would effectively end the practice of sharing albums by screenshot.

The publication said the QR-based system appeared to have been designed originally for sharing albums with people nearby rather than online, and that it could not say whether or when the revised sharing experience will reach users, with the timing left to Google.

The same teardown turned up a new bottom sheet that introduces users to the updated Collections tab. Android Authority has previously reported that the redesigned tab will allow items to be pinned to the top of the page. Separately, Google Photos has already started rolling out a reordering function for the Collections tab that lets users control where a particular folder appears.

Android Authority said the revamped Collections tab looks likely to arrive soon, while giving no confirmed date for either the tab redesign or the QR code sharing changes.
