Google Photos may soon let users set playback speed for created animations
Strings found in Google Photos version 7.96.0.99 point to 0.25x, 0.5x, 1x, 1.5x and 2x speed choices for animations made from multiple photos, plus a preview step before saving, according to Android Authority.
The strings indicate that when a user builds an animation from several photos, the app would offer playback speeds of 0.25x, 0.5x, 1x, 1.5x and 2x. The app currently combines multiple images into a GIF at a fixed default duration, and users have no way to change how long each frame is shown. The labels recovered from the app describe the choices as quarter speed, half speed, default speed, one and a half times speed and double speed, with corresponding 0.25x, 0.5x, 1x, 1.5x and 2x markers.
The same set of strings covers a preview step before an animation is kept. One entry carries the description “Preview GIF,” alongside entries for “Loading GIF” and “Exporting GIF.” Google Photos does not currently allow a preview before an animation is saved to the gallery. Android Authority said that after modifying the app it was able to display the interface on a test device.
Other strings recovered from the build relate to saving and sharing. Two entries read “Failed to save GIF” and “Failed to share GIF.” A confirmation dialog is titled “Save this animation?” and tells the user the file will be saved to the device in the Camera folder, which is visible to all accounts on the device, and will also be backed up to Google Photos for the account being used for backup.
The feature is not live in the current release. Android Authority, whose report is based on an examination of the app package rather than a Google announcement, said it expects the company to roll the controls out at some point. Google has not confirmed the change, and no release date for the speed options has been given.
