Google Photos Prepares AI Wardrobe Fixes and Ask Photos Delete All Option

One change is a “Regenerate image” option for individual items in Google Photos’ AI wardrobe. The wardrobe feature uses AI to identify clothing, shoes, glasses, and other items in a user’s photos and generate images of them. Those generated images can then be used in the try-on outfits feature. Currently, Google Photos creates an image for each wardrobe item when the feature is first set up, and there is no way to regenerate it if the result does not accurately represent the real item, Android Authority reported.

To use the new option, a user would open an item’s details page in the wardrobe and tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner. Tapping “Regenerate image” starts the process, and Google Photos shows progress while creating the new image. Users do not have to stay on the page; the process can continue in the background, according to the report.

Regeneration does not simply recreate the same image. Android Authority found that the AI can alter the generated representation. When it regenerated a pair of glasses, Google Photos made minor color changes and added nose pads that were not in the original generated image. It made similar changes to a shirt, adjusting colors and repositioning a logo. The report said the feature could help when the first AI-generated image is inaccurate, but a replacement could also be less accurate than the original.

That matters because the wardrobe images are used beyond viewing. Google Photos relies on them for its outfits feature, which lets users see how different clothing items might look together virtually. A separate teardown by Android Authority found that Google Photos could soon let users add new outfits to the virtual wardrobe with a plus-shaped button. At present, the report said, adding new outfits requires resetting the entire wardrobe. Earlier in September, Google also added the option to import outfits from existing photos and try them virtually against a neutral background with a more stoic pose. The feature has quirks, and Google is testing new options to expand it and address limitations, according to the report.

Google Photos may also add a “Delete all” button to the Remember List in Ask Photos. The Remember List saves information users share with Google Photos to improve searches and edits. Android Authority enabled the button in Google Photos version 7.95 and said it appears in the top-right corner, letting users delete every entry at once. Google will likely ask for confirmation before wiping the list. The option could be useful for users who want to start fresh or stop sharing sensitive information with Ask Photos. The report said there is no word on whether Google still retains that shared personal data after deletion, and the Remember List currently allows only individual entries to be removed.

Android Authority said it found the features through app teardowns and enabled them with some tinkering. The changes are not official announcements, and Google has not said when or whether they will roll out to users.
