Google Pixel 11 Pro XL's Extreme Charging: Faster but Hotter, Test Shows

Android Authority testing finds Google's Extreme Charging on the Pixel 11 Pro XL delivers faster charging but pushes battery temperatures above safe limits, raising degradation concerns.

The test compared charging with Extreme Charging on and off. Peak power remained similar in both modes, around 41W, but the extreme setting sustained that power for about 16 minutes instead of 10. With Extreme Charging enabled, the phone reached 75% charge in 28 minutes, beating Google's advertised 30 minutes, and a full charge took 64 minutes versus 69 minutes in standard mode. However, the trade-off was temperature: standard mode capped at about 39°C, while Extreme Charging reached 42.9°C and stayed above 40°C for about 20 minutes. The average charge-cycle temperature rose from 35.4°C to 38.3°C.

The higher sustained heat could contribute to long-term battery degradation, which is likely why Google made the feature optional rather than the default. The report notes that while the temperature is not extremely high, keeping the battery above 40°C for 20 minutes is a concern if used regularly.

In a comparison against the 60W Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and 80W OnePlus 15, the Pixel 11 Pro XL with Extreme Charging still lagged behind. The Pixel's full charge time of 64 minutes was much slower than the 42 minutes for both rivals, despite the OnePlus 15 having a larger 7,150mAh battery compared to the Pixel's 5,115mAh. After 10 minutes of charging, the rivals reached about 37% capacity, while the Pixel in extreme mode managed 31%.
