Google Recorder may soon expose recordings to file managers

Android Authority reports Google Recorder is working on a toggle that would keep recordings in device-native storage, making them visible to file manager apps instead of a sandboxed folder.

Recordings made in the app are currently held in a sandboxed folder that file manager apps cannot see, unless the user saves each file manually, the publication reports. Getting a recording out of the app today means downloading it through Android's share sheet, a process Android Authority describes as cumbersome.

The toggle under development would make those files accessible from native storage and would remember the user's choice, the report says, including after app data is cleared or the app is set up again on a new device. Android Authority did not say when the option might reach users, nor whether it has been confirmed for release.

Recorder is available only on Pixel devices. Alongside the sandboxed local folder, the app can hold audio files in the cloud, and Android Authority notes that managing saved recordings across those two places is not simple for users who handle large numbers of files.

According to Android Authority, the toggle is part of work in progress inside the app rather than a feature that has shipped, so its final form and availability are not yet settled.
