Google restores Pixel Now Playing notifications, adds multi-user support and history sync

Google is bringing back Now Playing notifications and multi-user support on Pixel devices, with history syncing in development, according to Android Authority.

Now Playing became a standalone app in March, a change that broke key functionality such as syncing tracks with third-party services like Last.fm. The new update, version 2026.08.27.972147369.0, introduces subtle interface tweaks now available to all Pixel users.

The three-dot button alongside tracks in history now opens a sheet sliding up from the bottom of the screen, replacing the former floating context menu. The app also shows a card reminding users they can search for songs by singing or humming using Google Search.

Android Authority said it was able to activate upcoming features in the latest version that are not yet live for everyone. Notifications from Now Playing, which were removed earlier this year, display the current track and include buttons to add the song to favorites or view history. To receive these notifications, users must enable them in the Android System Intelligence app, and the standalone Now Playing app may gain an in-app toggle.

The same build includes support for secondary users on Pixel devices. Previously, Now Playing was available only to the primary user; now it can function for other accounts as well.

Google is also developing a "History synchronization" toggle in notification settings. The associated code includes messages like "Your music history is syncing…" and "Check back in a few minutes to find your history here." Android Authority suspects this may address previous complaints about Now Playing history not loading fully, rather than syncing to Google Drive or the cloud, since no reference to "Drive," "cloud," or "backup" appears in the code.
