Google rolls out Motion Assist on Android to curb motion sickness for passengers
Google has launched Motion Assist, an Android feature that moves small shapes along the edges of the screen to ease motion sickness for passengers. It arrives as Google's answer to Apple's Vehicle Motion Cues, with availability limited to recent Android versions.
Motion Assist is limited to devices running Android 17 or higher with an updated version of Google Play Services, Engadget reported. Samsung phones must be running One UI 9 to use it. Owners of the new Pixel 11 models can try the feature now. On other brands, menu paths may differ, and searching for "Motion Assist" in settings is described as the most direct way to find it.
According to the report, motion sickness stems from conflicting signals between the inner ear and the eyes. The inner ear registers every turn, stop and acceleration, telling the brain the body is moving, while eyes fixed on a stationary screen indicate the opposite. Google's feature uses the device's motion sensors to move small shapes around the edges of the display in response to the car's movements. Google says this helps "your brain synchronize what your eyes see with what your body feels." The shapes stay at the edges of the screen, so text or video in the center remains unobstructed. Google states the feature is intended for passengers and should not be used by a driver.
Activation is handled in the settings menu. On a Pixel, users open the Settings app, tap their profile, select All services, and turn on Motion Assist from the Personal & device safety menu. To avoid repeating the steps on later trips, the Motion Assist settings include a "Start automatically in a moving vehicle" toggle. Even with that enabled, phone motion sensors may struggle to detect that a car is moving, so Google recommends adding the feature to the Quick Settings menu to keep it a couple of taps away.
Customization options match those of Apple's Vehicle Motion Cues. Users can adjust the colors, opacity and shapes that appear when Motion Assist is active through the Customize menu, which is accessible from the Motion Assist settings. A Randomization option changes the colors and shapes as the feature is used.
