Google Rolls Out Offline Live Translate, but Only on Pixel 11, 10 and 9 Phones

Google has begun rolling out an offline mode for Live Translate, limited to Pixel 11, Pixel 10 and Pixel 9 series phones and English plus ten other languages.

Live Translate lets one person speak in their native language and have it automatically translated for the other person. Until now, the Google Translate feature required an internet connection, which limited its usefulness in situations where mobile data is expensive or network coverage is unreliable. The offline mode is intended to address that problem for travelers and others who need to communicate across languages without depending on a live connection.

The offline mode currently works between English and French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Russian or Swedish. English must be one of the two languages being spoken. That means, for example, offline live translations cannot be made directly between French and German. The language list leaves out many other languages supported by Google Translate.

Device support is also narrow. According to the report, offline Live Translate is only coming to the Pixel 11 series, Pixel 10 line and Pixel 9 series. Owners of older Pixel phones or phones from other brands cannot use the offline mode for now. TechRadar noted that this means the vast majority of people will not be able to benefit from the feature and said it hoped the restriction would be temporary.

Alternatives already exist on other platforms. TechRadar said iOS has its own Live Translation feature that can be used offline, and Samsung Galaxy phones have a similar feature with offline functionality. Google's Live Translate feature is not exclusive to Pixels, so the report suggested it would be desirable for the offline upgrade to reach other phones as well.
