Google Rolls Out Pixel Buds Update With Sleep Detection and Tap-to-Mute
Google's Pixel Buds 2A and Pro 2 are receiving an update that adds Pixel Watch-powered sleep detection, tap-to-mute, one-tap live translation, Gemini voice controls and, on the Pro 2 only, Dynamic ANC.
The most substantial addition is sleep detection powered by the Pixel Watch. When a wearer has a Pixel Watch on, the earbuds will respond to the wearer falling asleep by pausing music, silencing notifications and switching off touch controls. The feature is being released to both the Buds 2A and the Buds Pro 2.
Both models also gain tap-to-mute, which lets a user mute or unmute the microphone with a quick tap during a call, although it works only when paired with a Pixel phone. Live translation can now be activated with a single tap. Google is adding Gemini voice commands as well, which allow a wearer to control active noise cancellation, adjust the equalizer and turn touch controls on or off through spoken instructions.
One feature is limited to the higher-end model. Dynamic ANC, exclusive to the Pixel Buds Pro 2, adjusts audio and noise-cancellation levels according to how well the earbuds are sealed in the user's ears.
Google announced the rollout in a post on its Pixel Buds community forum. An earlier version of that post, published a day before, stated that every feature except Dynamic ANC would also reach the original Pixel Buds Pro, but all references to those earbuds have since been removed from the post. The Verge said it had contacted Google for comment on the change.
