Google's $180 Fitbit Edge takes on $99.95 Inspire 3 with larger screen, GPS
Google's Fitbit Edge adds GPS, ECG and aluminum case for $180, versus the $99.95 Inspire 3's plastic design.
The Edge's screen is 6.9mm wider than the Inspire 3's, though the devices have similar dimensions: 39.2 x 25.5 x 11.5mm for the Edge and 39.32 x 18.6 x 11.75mm for the Inspire 3. The Edge uses a 100 percent recycled aluminum case and a more tactile side button, while the Inspire 3 has a plastic, more rectangular case. The Edge comes in olive green, black, white and coral peach, plus a $220 Steph Curry edition; the Inspire 3 comes in pink, orange and black.
The Edge adds built-in GPS, which Google says improves movement-tracking accuracy by 40 percent and lets users run without a phone, Engadget reported. It also has Bluetooth 5.4 for connecting wireless headphones directly, and supports Quick Replies, music controls, weather forecasts and, soon, Google Maps, according to the report. Both devices support Google's Find My Device and phone notifications when nearby; the Inspire 3 also shows calendar notifications.
For fitness, both track activity continuously, but the Edge automatically detects 100 movement activities and tracks more than 50 exercise modes, compared with 20 on the Inspire 3. The Edge adds cardio load, target cardio load, floors climbed and heart-rate tracking on workout machines.
Health sensors differ: the Edge offers 24/7 heart-rate tracking and an ECG app with irregular heartbeat (AFib) detection, plus monthly insights into blood pressure and insulin resistance and analysis of separately monitored blood sugar, according to Engadget. The Inspire 3 has an optical heart-rate monitor, blood oxygen tracker and accelerometer; the Edge has those plus ECG sensors, a skin-temperature sensor, gyroscope and altimeter for more accurate GPS tracking.
Battery life is shorter on the Edge: up to a week on a charge, versus up to 10 days for the Inspire 3. Both carry a 5 ATM water-resistance rating under ISO standard 22810:2010, suitable for rain, showering and shallow-water swimming but not diving. The Edge also has an IP68 dust-resistance rating, which the Inspire 3 lacks; neither device is fully waterproof.
Engadget concluded that the Edge is a notable upgrade over the Inspire 3, with more premium materials, more trackable fitness data and less dependence on a smartphone. It positions the Edge between a simple fitness wearable and a fully connected smartwatch, for users who find the Google Pixel Watch 5's price and features excessive.
