Google Says ChromeOS Updates Will Continue Through Mid-2034, With Newer Chromebooks Able to Move to Googlebook OS

Google said ChromeOS updates and security patches will continue through mid-2034, after which qualifying newer commercial Chromebooks will be able to migrate to the new Googlebook OS, according to Slashdot, citing 9to5Google.

Google said current Chromebooks will continue to receive updates through their supported lifetime. It also said all Enterprise and Education management capabilities will remain in place. In a quoted statement, Google said, "We will maintain support for current Chromebook devices running ChromeOS as outlined in our Auto Update policy and the Chromebooks you have today will continue to receive updates through their supported lifetime..."

Google said similar management tools will come to Googlebook, but they are not available yet. According to the report, they are planned for the second half of 2027.

Google said "many" existing Chromebook models will be eligible to transition from ChromeOS to Googlebook OS, with more details coming "soon." A later note specifies that the eligible devices are "newer commercial Chromebook models."

The later note also identifies 2034 as the year ChromeOS updates will come to an end. Chromebooks with a 10-year update policy that extends past 2034 will be eligible to move to Googlebook OS, according to the report.

On apps, Google said it is "committed" to web developers despite an increased focus on Android apps on Googlebooks. No further timeline or details were provided in the report.
