Google starts rolling out Pics, an AI image editor integrated into Workspace

Google begins rolling out Pics, an AI image editor in Workspace, letting users create and edit visuals with text prompts and challenging Canva.

According to TechRadar, Pics begins with a prompt. Users describe what they want to create, such as a child's birthday invitation, an event poster, or a social media graphic, and the AI generates several versions to choose from. Individual objects or text can then be selected and changed without regenerating the whole image. Text may be edited, reformatted, or translated while preserving the surrounding design, and images can be cropped for different formats or upscaled to 2K or 4K. Multiple changes can be requested at once, and users can return to an earlier version if needed.

The tool is powered by Nano Banana, Gemini's image generation and editing model. It is part of Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions and selected Workspace business plans, TechRadar says.

The most important distinction from Canva is that Pics is not just a standalone app. Google is integrating its editing tools directly into Docs and Slides, with deeper Drive integration expected in the coming weeks, according to the report. This allows users to select an image in a presentation or document and edit it while staying in the same app. For example, if an image in a document is too dark, a user can ask Pics to lighten it without leaving Google Docs. Creations can be shared and edited collaboratively like other Workspace files.

TechRadar acknowledges that Canva remains a broader and more mature design platform, with templates covering presentations, websites, and video. Pics doesn't need to replace all of that, but its direct integration with Workspace could make users question whether opening Canva is still necessary for everyday graphics.

According to TechRadar, Pics is rolling out over the coming weeks to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, as well as eligible Workspace business and education customers.
