Google tells Canadian Android users to update after permanent daylight saving shift

Google tells Canadian Android users to update and restart if clocks show wrong time after permanent DST shift.

In an announcement shared to the Android community help forums, Google said the issue affects devices showing an incorrect time because of the time zone changes. “If you are in Canada and your device is showing an incorrect time due to the new time zone laws beginning Nov 1, please apply any pending updates from your phone’s manufacturer and Google, and then restart your device,” the company said.

If the device still displays an incorrect time or time zone, Google suggests enabling location-based time zone detection. Users can search for “Date and Time” in Android’s settings and turn on both “Automatic time zone” and “Use location for time zone.” If that does not resolve the problem, Google suggests disabling “Automatic time zone” detection in Android settings and manually selecting a time zone that matches the correct time offset for the region.

Daylight saving time rules vary from province to province in Canada and even within smaller regions, making it occasionally difficult for devices to stay on top of changes in a timely manner, according to The Verge. British Columbia and Manitoba permanently switched to daylight saving time this year, prompting Google to offer the suggested fixes for Android users.

In the United States, the House advanced the Sunshine Protection Act in July, moving the country closer to permanently adopting daylight saving time. The Verge reported that the change could have consequences from getting an extra hour of sun in the evening all year long. The outlet also reported that the issue may be less of a problem in the US if the entire country decides to adopt permanent daylight saving time all at once.
