Google Tests Full-Screen GameSnacks in Android Auto Beta

Google appears to be preparing a full-screen GameSnacks experience for Android Auto that removes the navigation rail from both the GameSnacks menu and the games themselves, according to a change activated in the latest beta build.

According to Android Authority, which activated the change in the latest Android Auto beta, the rail disappears from both the main GameSnacks screen and from the games once they are launched, freeing the entire dashboard display. If the change reaches a stable release, GameSnacks would match the behavior of other Android Auto games, such as Beach Buggy Racing, which already run full screen.

In the current public build, opening GameSnacks leaves Android Auto's navigation rail visible on the side of the screen, and the rail stays in place after a game starts. In the version Android Authority enabled, that rail is gone. Swiping down from the top of the display still brings up the back and Exit buttons, with Exit returning the user to Android Auto's app list, the same control scheme used by regular games.

The test version also shows a permanently visible back button on screen that does not currently respond to input. Because the usual controls remain available through the swipe-down gesture, Android Authority described the non-functional button as more likely a bug than an intentional part of the new design, and said it may be removed before the change ships publicly.

The finding follows Google's move this week to take Android Auto games out of beta and make them generally available. Gaming in Android Auto is limited to when the vehicle is parked, and the full-screen treatment would give GameSnacks more of the display area that other titles already use. Google has not announced the GameSnacks change, and the feature was reachable only by activating it inside the beta build, so it is not certain to appear in a public release.
